Dr. Gladys Boyd received her medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1918. She became one of the pioneers in the treatment of juvenile diabetes. She was also an internationally-recognized expert on childhood nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys). From 1921 until 1950, she was head of the Endocrine Service at the Hospital for Sick Children. Here, she directed research into diabetes, nephritis and tuberculosis. Dr. Boyd was elected president of the Federation of Medical Women of Canada in 1932. She died in 1970.
